Advice for the decoration of eggs – appointement necessary
In context of the new exhibition “Sonnenrad und Wolfszähne. Verzierte Ostereier aus der Lausitz.” we offer (additional to the common decorating by waxing) a programm about scratching and etching eggs.
This workshops takes place:
Tuesday, March the 29nth from 10.00 am – 12.oo am.
Even though it is a fix date, we would kindly ask you, to announce your participation.
Here is some practical advice: In case you participate at a session about the waxing techniques, please bring some emptied white eggs for your own use. Otherwise, if you want to excercise the etching or scratching techniques, we need you, to have some coloured eggs ready by yourself (emptied or boiled). Furthermore it is recommandable to carry ones own pointed object (engravin knife) to the scratching course. That is needed to scratch the patterns on the coloured egg. Thank you!

New catalogue
The actual special exhibtion comes with its own catalogue. It is available for 10 € in our entrance hall.
It is the most current, scientific and extensive work about the entrire easter-egg customs and all the customs linked to it. On the other site it is still pleasant to read and very skillfully set up. The bilingual book (upper-lusatian sorbian and german) comes with a lot of pictures and phototgraphs. In the second section a choice of known egg-artists present in the exhibition are presented.
In case you are planning to visit the region, this book could make an ideal gift for your friends and relativs back home.
Gathering of the Maćica Serbska
Saturday the fifth of march we have the honour, to provide the audience hall for the annual gathering of the sorbian/Wendish academic society, the Maćica Serbska (in Lower Sorbian/ lowerlusatian wendish: Maśica Serbska). Established by the example of other already existing academic societies in slavic countries the history of the Serbski muzej and its precedors is closely linked to that of the Maćica up to WW2. It roots down to the first theoretical conception, of how a wendish/sorbian museum should look like, written by the famous Dr. Arnošt Muka (Dr. Ernst Mucke), which was quite ambitious (far above a normal museum, he invisioned a cultural centre with a gathering hall; a library; a bar, meant to be the pooling place for all sorbian clubs and societies as well as some additional rooms as a dormitory for students.).
After the entire eventfull history and throughout its own differing names and maintenance (not to look at the chronoligical gap, caused by the forced closing), we are lucky to say : We do have quite a museum with a nice audience hall nowadays.
Those facts and connections go well with this years running memorial year celebrating Jan Arnošt Smoler (Ernst Schmaler, 200 years since he was born), who besides many other things (establishing the first wendish publishing, bookshop), enabled the existence of the first wendish museum in bautzen. After he bought the building, that served a the first Wendish house in history, there was also space provided for the wendish museum. As an institution the Serbski muzej is today itself a member of the Maćica Serbska.
Scratching and etching eggs : 1p.m.-5 p.m.
During the Easter-egg-bazar in the Serbski Dom the Serbski muzej offers an additional special highlight. Mrs. Kirsten Böhme and her daughter will instruct and demonstrate how to decorate eggs by scratching and etching. To make it even more authentic, you can see, how eggs get coloured in the stock of onionshells. We want to excercise this traditional style of the Hoyerswerda-region. This workshop is only offered this saturday.
New coworker for the visitor service.
We are glad, to welcome a new coworker for the visitor service, in our museum. Mrs. Madlen Wella takes up service, after of our longtime colleague Mrs. Schkoda retired by the turn of the year. Not only is she a native speaker of the wendish/sorbian language, but also has she already experienced the work to the public in a museum, which as a feature, was quite welcomed.
Welcome to our Museum an we hope you like it !
