For the first time the Sorbian museum dedicates an exhibition to photographic history and the question, when did sorbian/wendish motives appear as an image worth showing. It will be shown from Sunday, October the 9^th till Wednesday, March the 3^rd. For that numerous original photographic pictures in archives and museums throughout Lusatia have been sighted.

Do you possess interesting historical photographies (with sorbian/wendish content) of the time from 1850 till 1930? If so, we would be most grateful if you could lend them to us for the duration of the exhibition! Two walls are exclusively reserved for this purpose. That way, you could participate in the exhibition. History consists of live and transient moments; which is expressed by no medium as clear as photography.

In case you consider to follow this appeal: We kindly ask that first you send your chosen pictures to us in a digital form. We will contact you back in any case. Please do not send us any material unsolicited via postal service.

This time we would like to present you a special exponat from our collection with the backgroundstory as far as known.

Our restorer Mr. Barth is going to talk about the conservational aspects of the piece.

European heritages days/ Tag des offenen Denkmals – Testimony of history

The Sorbian Museum participates in this years „Open-monument day“ throughout Germany Sunday, september the 11nth 2016. On this day visiting the museum is free.

We take pride in presenting the results of the youth project „Zeugen der Geschichte“ [Testimonies of history] – djo Deutsche Jugend in Europa. Over several months a group of students and soon-to-be graduates from Bautzen researched the history and the architectural features of our museums building, conducted by Michael Jemeljanow. The results of this effort will be presented as a small exhibition on that day. It consists of:

1. a 3D-film about the history oft he Sorbian Museum and ist current building as well as the history oft he sorbian culture.
2. a 3D-film about the project initiative
3. a VR-presentation for a 360° view at the museum building from outside
4. a BIM (Building Information Modelling) presentation with VR-glasses for a virtual visit oft he museums inside
5. information boards about sorbian history and culture, since the exhibition will be shown on different locations.
6. a paper – model oft he Sorbian museum

Participants of the project will be present to explain and assist at the different stations.

Eastereggs versus “Ei”-phone

“Sorbian folkart in the 21st. century?!” Does our traditional sorbian/wendish culture stand a chance against distractions like Pokémon Go and similar products, and if so, how is it supposed to act to keep on being?

The Sorbian Museum invites folkartists and everyone interested to a public discussion in cooperation with the Support association for sorbian folk-culture (Förderkreis für sorbische Volkskultur) on Wednesday, August the 31st 2017 at 7.00 p.m.

The discussion will be hosted by Andrea Paulik and Theresa Walde, and translated into german simultaneously via ear-phone. At 6.00 pm a guided tour through the temporary exhibition “Pruhi, kruhi, třiróžki” takes place.

Saturday, August the 27nth a concert by the sorbian musician, songwriter (music-poet) Bernd Pittkunings will be held in the Festive hall of the Sorbian Museum at 6.30 p.m.

The entry is gratis and the audience hall will be accessible from 6.15 pm.

In his sometimes quiet, sometimes cheerfull songs Bernd Pittkunings sings about sorbian/wendish identity in a german environment.

Next weeks official start of these years summer holidays in the Free State of Saxony gets closer by the day. If you are searching for a destination or a programme, especially in the second half oft he holidays, maybe you could take part in our  textile-workshop „New patterns on old clothing“. There are two fix appointements on July the 16nth as well as july the 27nth, but further appointements can be made. Also our other educational offers are furthermore bookable.

Further Outlook:

In the late summer, at the last day of august – a whole evening programme is planned about the subject of our recent exhibition about the patterns and symbols in the wendish folkloristic art („Pruhi, kruhi, třiróžki). At 6. p.m. a guided tour through the exhibition takes place and at 7 p.m. a discussion by the title „Wendish/Sorbian fokloristic art in the 21 century?“ will be held with the participation of folkloristic artists of the different branches of folk-art.

The next date for our regular Coffee at three o’clock is september the 7nth at, well 3 p.m. The subject will be presented by our restorer. It is an historical subject and it is something you might not expect in our museum. That much can be said.

Due to this years open air summer-theatre season there will be some changes, concerning the opening times. In this regard we would like to point out especially, that the Serbski muzej will not be part of these years Lange Nacht der Kultur (Long night of culture) June the 11nth. The irregular opening times are also mentioned in the calendre-function on this site.

For the nonmentioned dates the regular opening times are valid as to be seen on this site.

It will be displayed in a special place, namely the Museum of the German Northern Schleswigers. The association of German North-Schleswigers has declared 2016 as their Sorbian Theme year.

So we take pride to display or exhibtion „Small folk. Abundant culture.“, which stresses the contemporary cultural life of Sorbs.

Almost 1700 persons, tourists and locals used the Easter holidays to visit the Serbski muzej with its exhibitions and the public decorating of eggs. The high point was saturdays programm in the afternoon at 4.00 p.m. In the audience hall full of spectators up to the last seat and beyound, Marta and Hanka Sarodnik from Zeißig played with their mother Anett. Sorbian-wendish pieces on the bagpipes,l the wendish violine and pipes as well as the skillfully performed duett “Komu su sněhowki” [To whom belong the snowdrops?] enchanted the audience.

While pausing from playing music, members of the Sarodnik-family gave explanations about their instruments, sorbian customs and the traditional clothing . The lad‘s/men‘s clothing was displayed by brother Werner Sarodnik and Paul Mautz. A lot of visitors made use of the possibility to chat with the talent-blessed young familiy right after the concert.
