Exhibition: Karl Vouk. Satkula abo (s)tworjena krajina. – Karl Vouk. Satkula or The created landscape.
In 2011 the Slovene from Carinthia Mr. Karl Vouk visited the middle belt of Upper Lusatia, where the pits from the decades lasting open-cast mining can be found a lot. There he got the inspiration for his series – „KARL VOUK. SATKULA or the created landscape.“ The series contains 25 pictures with typical motives from this landscape, which are confronted by quotes from the novel of Jurij Brězan „Krabat.“ as well as by quotes from the both constituions of Saxonia and Brandenburg. Thus the consequences of the coal-mining get pointed out especially in respect of the environmental and cultural inheritance of this region.
In connection to „Satkula“ Vouk presents parts of his new series with the title „Schwarzwasser/Čornica“: Photographies of several open cast lakes, all kept in dark shades, combined with roughly sketched landscapes, for which he uses graphit and charcoal. One the one side there are the gentle hills of Upper Lusatia, on the other the landscape-fragements, that mutated into the abstract patterns resulting from the open cast mining.
